Men's Grand Slams in the 1980s

Bit of a trick question, this. Hands up anyone that said Stefan Edberg?

Mats Wilander won more Grand Slam titles than Edberg – three French, three Australian, and one US. But he never got beyond the quarter finals at Wimbledon, which is probably why we Brits don't remember him so well.

We remember Edberg because he won Wimbledon twice (in 1988 and 1990 – beating Becker both times). He also won the Australian and US Opens twice each; but he never won the French. Total six Grand Slams, to Wilander's seven. He was also a couple of years younger than Wilander, and three of his titles (including both US Opens) were in the 1990s.

Ivan Lendl won eight Grand Slam singles titles altogether: three French, three US, and two Australian. But the second of his Australian Open wins was in 1990. And like Wilander, he never won Wimbledon – although he did reach the final in 1986 and 1987, losing to Becker and Cash respectively.

So who won most Wimbledon men's singles titles in the 1980s?

You won't be surprised to hear that John McEnroe and Boris Becker won three each, while Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Pat Cash and Stefan Edberg won one each. McEnroe also won the US Open four times, between 1979 and 1984; but he never won the French or Australian, giving him a total of seven grand slams (six of them in the 1980s).
